Do Contractors Need a Website or Is Google Business Profile Enough?
If you run a small contracting business, you’ve probably heard that Google Business Profile is all you need. Set it up, get some reviews, show up in local searches. Free, easy, done.
That’s partly true. But it’s not the whole story.
What Google Business Profile does well
Google Business Profile is genuinely valuable and every contractor should have one. It puts your business on Google Maps, shows your phone number and hours, lets customers leave reviews, and helps you show up when someone nearby searches for what you do.
For many service searches, especially those with local intent like “plumber near me” or “HVAC repair Spokane,” map results appear before regular website results. If you’re in those results with good reviews, people will call.
If you don’t have a Google Business Profile, set one up today before you do anything else. It’s free and takes about 30 minutes.
Where Google Business Profile falls short
The problem is that Google Business Profile is a listing, not a website. It tells people you exist. It doesn’t tell them much about who you are or why they should hire you over the next contractor on the list.
Here’s what you can’t do with Google Business Profile alone:
Show your work properly. You can add photos but the format is limited. You can’t walk someone through a project, show before-and-after, or explain your process in any real detail.
Explain what makes you different. Every HVAC contractor on the list has a Google Business Profile. None of them looks different from the others. Your profile has a name, phone number, and some reviews. So does everyone else.
Capture leads when people aren’t ready to call. Some people want to research before they pick up the phone. They want to look at your work, read about your process and maybe fill out a form. If there’s no website to go to, they move on to someone who has one.
Build trust with larger jobs. For a $200 repair, someone might just call the first number they see. For a $15,000 project, they’re doing more research. A professional website signals that you’re a real, established business worth trusting with a bigger job.
The short answer
Google Business Profile and a website work together. The profile gets you found. The website closes the deal.
If your only option is a Google Business Profile or nothing, go with the profile. But if you’re choosing between investing in a real website and relying only on your profile, the website will make you more money over time.
Most contractors who have both will tell you the same thing: the profile gets the phone to ring, but the website is what makes people feel good about calling.
What kind of website do you actually need?
You don’t need anything fancy. Three to five pages is enough for most trades and service companies.
A homepage that explains what you do and where you work. A services page. A few project photos. A contact form and a phone number that’s easy to find. That’s it.
A simple, professional site that loads fast and looks good on a phone will outperform an elaborate site that’s hard to navigate or slow to load every time.
